Retro 80’s themed solarium
When covid hit, we were unable to service many of our clients due to shutdowns which led to very sad plants or very dead plants. This also led to re-design opportunities in the case of this ‘Blast from the past’ job!
This location is unique in many ways – having lots of indirect, bright light, built in planters and a funky 1980s Malibu vibe. The space is perfect for unique tropical plants. There are a total of four planters in this space measuring roughly 320 sqft, to which all were re-designed.
So, how did it happen?
The first step in this re-design was planning.
Over the years, this client has seen many varieties of tropical plants in the space. She specifically asked for more unique varieties she’d never owned before. This presented a few obtainable challenges for us. First – this re-design was planned for the middle of February…. Tropical plants do not like the tundra cold! Second – with plants becoming ever so popular in design and residential markets, plants are hard to find these days! We were able to successfully narrow down the final plants + delivery dates that worked around the coldest days.
The next step was to remove all the old material, prep the planters & build the soil back up.
In any planter, over time soil compacts and nutrients degrade, so we need to build those beds back up. The soil grounds the plant and provides basic nutrients for the newly planted material. 210 cubic feet of soil was required for this job!
Next, plant the plants!
Our design team spent hours researching, ordering and planning for the perfect plants. The designer and installers review the design and understand what goes where in order for the plants to best succeed.
Lastly, it’s time to water the plants and wish them well in their new home!
