Plant Care Series – Part 3

Watering

Did you know, the number one cause of house plant failure is overwatering?

If you have several house plants, chances are they require different watering schedules and needs, however other variables need to be considered:

  • Season – is the plant flowering or in dormancy?
  • Container type and size – is the plant sitting or hanging in a pot? Hanging plants tend to dry out faster.
  • Location in the home – south facing window or further away from windows?
  • Temperature and humidity in the home –  does the house tend to be dry or is a humidifier running in the same room as the plants?
  • Proximity to heat source – hot dry air in winter can cause plants to use more water.

How to Water:

  • Direct watering around the soil is best.
  • Give the plant a drink of water, not sip. Add enough, so water comes out of the drain hole.
  • Avoid wetting the leaves, this can invite fungus.
  • Bottom watering is another way to water without drenching foliage.
  • Try not to let the plant sit in water very long – this can lead to rotting roots.
  • About 30 min after watering, check on the pots that sit inside decorative pots, dump out access water and do the same for pots with drain holes that sit in saucers.
