Plant Care Series – Part I

Lighting

With the online plant sale growing in popularity, we’d like to thank everyone for participating and supporting a small, local business, especially during 2020. We’d also like to share some care tips for those plants! We do provide a care sheet with each order and it can be viewed on our website here, but thought we could share a series of tips covering different topics over the next few weeks, starting with basic light requirements!

Direct Light – the most intense light for indoors and will expose plants directly to the sun’s rays. Careful, intense, direct sun can burn plants.  Works for: Cacti, Aloe and succulents

Bright Light – not really direct light, but definitely not medium light, the spots right night to a window that receives a dash of direct light (no more than an hour a day) before being obstructed. Suggested plants: Ficus, Birds of Paradise, Monstera,

Medium Light – the spots in a room that are half the distance between a window and back wall. Still plenty bright, but nowhere near direct. Suggested plants: Chamaedorea, Croton, Hoya, Neantha Bella Palm, Pothos, Spider plant, Orchids

Low Light – areas that are 7ft or more from windows, or places that have no natural light. Certain plant species are adaptable and can live here, but will grow much slower. If your plant starts to look sad, consider moving it to medium light. Suggested plants: Sansevieria, Aglaonema, ZZ Plant, Dracaena, Calathea, Peperomia

Check out this neat diagram created by Leon and George that illustrates the different types of lighting requirements.
